Statistical Profile of "Women in MERCOSUR 2000" was
carried out in the framework of the Program "Women and Democracy in
the MERCOSUR", supported by the Heinrich Böll Foundation. The
Women's Non Governamental Organizations who took part in it were: Cecym
(Argentina), Instituto de la Mujer, ISIS and Memch (Chile) and Cotidiano
Mujer (Uruguay).
The work is the result of a
compilation of the main indicators available in regional and international
sources. We put them together in order to have an easy and clear way to get to
the required information. The work's aim is not to be an exhaustive one. It's
format is directed towards those who need to find data in a fast way with a
reliable information.
International pre and post Beijing
process strenghtened regional exchange within de feminist and women's
movement. In these last five years since 1995, many coordinations and
articulations have been created with the objective of monitoring and of
following up the commitments adopted by governments.
Although all these actions have
generated many national documents of evaluation, as well as some regional
meetings it is yet an incipient movement. The development of these movements
aim to debate the integration that goes further than the commercial agreements
of MERCOSUR. It also implies - for better or for worst - large changes in
women's life.
To be able to carry out the debate
and the actions it is essential to have the appropiate information and to
enlarge our sources. That's why in the next issue of the Statistical Profile
we commit ourselves to search in our national sources. Governments ought to
update the data and add a variable by sex. It is our right as citizens to
demand it.
